Invisalign Q & A

by Travis Howard, D.D.S.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a system of clear aligners made of almost invisible polyurethane plastic. Unlike traditional metal or clear braces that are cemented or bonded in place, Invisalign offers clear aligners that are completely removable. This makes them versatile and flexible so you can enjoy your day-to-day activities such as eating or brushing. Some other advantages of the Invisalign system include:

  • Improved Oral Hygiene
  • A Discreet Look
  • More Dietary Choices
  • Teeth-Grinding Protection
  • Comfort

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign technology works the same way that traditional braces do: by applying a controlled force to the teeth and moving them into a better position. Specialty computer software helps the team at Paola Family Dentistry design a plan for moving your teeth back into proper alignment. This movement will be broken down into several steps. At each step, you will receive two plastic mouth “trays” or “aligners,” one for your top teeth and one for the bottom. These should be worn for two weeks, at a minimum of twenty hours per day. You will then move on to the next set of aligners in your series to accomplish the next stage of gradual movement until your teeth are correctly aligned.

How do I care for my teeth with Invisalign?

One of the main advantages of the Invisalign system is the flexibility that allows for the trays to be removed and cleaned. You’ll need to brush your teeth after every meal or snack so that food and plaque do not get trapped in the aligners. The aligners should also be cleaned on a regular basis. You can do this by brushing them and then rinsing them with lukewarm water. In order to maintain the benefits of your new smile, you’ll want to be sure to wear your retainers exactly as prescribed after your treatment is completed.
