A dental crown is a type of full coverage restoration which encases the entire part of your tooth above the gum line. Crowns restore the shape, function, and strength of teeth, and often improve their appearance. The porcelain used comes in a variety of shades so Dr. Howard will match the color of the porcelain crown to your adjacent teeth.
There are many reasons that a crown can be necessary. Most commonly, crowns are used restoratively to protect weak or cracked teeth from further breakage. Crowns can be used to restore teeth that have been worn down significantly, to protect a malnourished tooth after a root canal, and when too much too structure has been lost due to decay or fracture that a filling will not protect the tooth adequately. Crowns can also be used cosmetically to change the appearance of healthy teeth such as discolored or misshapen teeth.
